TEAM | PLAYER | RECORD | ERA |
Florida | LHP Pierce Coppola | 0-4 | 9.16 |
Kentucky | LHP Dominic Niman | 8-4 | 6.24 |
Florida will turn to Pierce Coppola against Kentucky after burning Liam Peterson against Texas A&M and Jac Caglianone throwing an inning against NC State. Coppola has had some success against the Wildcats already — throwing 2 2/3 innings without giving up an earned run against UK in May.
Coppola should be able to go more than the 64 pitches he threw last time against the ‘Cats, but he’ll have a short leash. This is just start No. 8 for Coppola since returning from a two-year injury stint, so there are still good days and bad days. Either way, the bullpen is going to need to go four or more, and closer Brandon Neely shouldn’t be available.
The good news is that Florida is likely to face the Kentucky starter it hit best during the regular-season series, Dominic Niman. At one point, Niman was considered the team’s top arm, but things have been rough for him over the past two months. He has a 14.77 ERA through his last seven appearances and opponents are hitting nearly .400 against him.
Florida got to Niman for six earned runs last time around. Could there be more fireworks in store? — David Rosenberg
