Brandon Nimmo stays hot, Luis Severino pitches well as Mets beat Nationals, 6-2

The Mets won the second game of their three-game series with the Washington Nationals on Wednesday night, 6-2, securing a series win.

Here are the takeaways…

-We’ll start this one in the sixth inning with New York down 2-1 to Patrick Corbin and the Nationals. Up until that point, the Mets had put up just one run against the veteran lefty on five hits, but they got back-to-back singles by J.D. Martinez and Pete Alonso to start the frame before Mark Vientos followed with a run-scoring double to tie the game and knock Corbin out.

After Francisco Alvarez walked on four pitches against reliever Derek Law, Jose Iglesias knocked in the go-ahead runs with a two-run single that put New York back in front. Iglesias came around to score later in the inning to make it 5-2.

-Before all of that, Brandon Nimmo gave the Mets an early 1-0 lead with a home run in the first inning – his 16th of the season. Nimmo continues to be red-hot at the plate and has homered in three straight games for the first time in his career.

Luis Severino took the ball for New York and aside from one unfortunate inning (partly of his own making), he threw the ball well. The right-hander went 6.1 innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits, three walks and striking out four while throwing 92 pitches (54 strikes).

His hiccup came in the fourth inning with two outs and runners on first and second. Juan Yepez had the third hit of the inning that drove in the tying run, but right fielder Tyrone Taylor hustled and got to the ball quickly and threw toward home plate. The throw was up the line and skipped past Alvarez, but with Severino failing to cover home — as he should have been — a second run came around to score.

Severino did the same thing on the next batter, a single by Ildemaro Vargas, but it did not result in a run. After some heavy lifting, the right-hander finally got out of the inning without further damage.

-The Mets added a run in the eighth inning on Taylor’s third triple of the season and had 12 hits on the night as the offense continued to rake. Vientos finished 2-for-3 with two doubles, a walk, an RBI and a run scored.

-New York’s bullpen followed a shaky performance on Tuesday with 2.2 scoreless innings. Jake Diekman (0.2 IP, 2 K), Danny Young (0.2 IP, 1 H) and Jose Butto (1.1 IP, 2 K) all looked solid with Butto getting his first save of his career.

Game MVP: Jose Iglesias

Iglesias led the team with three hits in the No. 7 hole, was one of four Mets to record multiple hits…
