Cal Softball Head Coach To Remain In Berkeley Through 2028
BERKELEY – California softball head coach Chelsea Spencer has signed a three-year contract extension, California Director of Athletes Jim Knowlton announced Wednesday. Spencer, who is in her fifth season at the helm, is now signed through the 2028 season.
“We are excited to extend Chelsea’s contract as she continues to lead our program to the upper echelon of college softball,” Knowlton said. “Chelsea has already accomplished a lot during her time guiding our team and I know there are even greater things to come. Her experience as a national champion student-athlete here at Cal and her proven leadership as a coach makes her the perfect fit to continue to lead us into the future.”
Spencer is coming off arguably her best season as the head coach for the Golden Bears after leading Cal to 37 overall wins in 2024, its most since the 2015 season, and a second straight NCAA postseason appearance. In her first four seasons guiding Cal’s program, Spencer has a career record of 117-87-2, and produced 18 all-conference selections, 13 NFCA all-region honorees and four All-American honors.
Spencer’s Bears began the 2025 season with a No. 21 national ranking, according to ESPN.com/USA Softball. Cal, which is playing its inaugural season as a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference, was selected to finish sixth in the conference in the preseason coaches’ poll.
“I am grateful and honored for the opportunity to stay at the helm of this program and to lead it to the heights that it once was,” Spencer said. “The investment that Jim Knowlton and our senior leadership have put into this softball program is tremendous. This commitment to passionate leadership and relentless dedication to the game underscores the alignment in our shared vision, goals and values. A top educational institution coupled with continued investment into our program will propel us to be the premier West Coast destination for all softball players and will give us the chance to win a national championship again.”
