No. 1 Texas outlasted No. 8 Texas Tech in a tense extra-inning battle Friday night, winning 2-1 at McCombs Field thanks to a chaotic walk-off sequence in the ninth.
With the game tied 1-1, Joley Mitchell led off the ninth with a single, and Leighann Goode followed with another base hit to right. Then, Victoria Hunter was struck by the ball while running to first, allowing Mitchell to score the winning run in dramatic fashion.
The game was defined by a dominant pitching duel between Texas’ Teagan Kavan and Texas Tech’s NiJaree Canady, two of the country’s premier arms who met in last year’s Women’s College World Series.
Kavan was sensational, striking out a career-high 18 batters over nine innings, surrendering just four hits and one run on 147 pitches. She fanned the side in the ninth, giving Texas the opening it needed.

Canady was equally electric, striking out 11 batters and allowing eight hits over eight-plus innings, but the Red Raiders couldn’t provide enough run support.
Texas Tech took the lead in the fourth inning on an Anya German RBI single, but Mia Scott’s two-out RBI double in the fifth tied the game. From there, both pitchers took control, keeping the scoreboard frozen until the decisive ninth.
The win extends Texas’ 13-game winning streak over Texas Tech, a streak that dates back to 2021. The Longhorns improve to 8-0, while the Red Raiders drop to 6-2.
