Baseball Rallies Past San Diego, 12-6, for Series Sweep

Rice

TUCSON, Ariz. — The Arizona Wildcats (4-3) wrapped up a perfect homestand on Sunday afternoon, downing the San Diego Toreros (0-7) on a final score of 12-6 to secure a series sweep.

Arizona improved to 4-3 following a difficult opening weekend in Arlington, Texas and leaves the friendly confines of Hi Corbett Field riding a four-game win streak.

Starting pitcher Smith Bailey extended his scoreless innings streak to open his collegiate career, working 5.0 three-hit frames while striking out three. He did not factor into the decision.

Right-handed reliever Michael Hilker Jr. (1-1) earned the win after getting the Wildcats out of a jam in the top of the eighth inning and working a hitless ninth. Hilker entered the eighth with the game tied at 6-6 and the go-ahead run at third base before inducing a strikeout to eliminate the threat.

Following Hilker’s escape the Wildcats rallied for six runs in the bottom of the eighth, highlighted by a two-run triple from Brendan Summerhill and a two-run double from Garen Caulfield.
