Terps Lose Series Finale To UCLA, 11-5


COLLEGE PARK, MD – Maryland baseball was defeated by UCLA in game three of the series, 11-5, at Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium on Saturday. The Bruins (12-4, 2-1 Big Ten) also took game one on Friday, giving them the series win. The Terps are 8-7 overall and 1-2 in Big Ten play.  

UCLA scored all 11 of its runs on nine hits in the top of the second, and Maryland was never able to overcome the double-digit deficit. Still, the Terps hunkered down for the remainder of the game, not allowing any more runs and scoring five unanswered. They also allowed just two hits outside of the inning. 

Aden Hill finished the contest going 3-for-4 at the plate, driving in the Terps’ first and second runs of the game with an RBI double in the third inning and an RBI single in the fifth. Brayden Martin added an RBI single in the sixth, and Michael Iannazzo belted a two-run RBI double in the seventh inning. He went 2-for-2, with a walk entering the game off the bench. Jacob Orr was the third Terp to finish with multiple hits, going 2-for-3 with a double and a run. 


 

Alex Calarco continued his hit and on-base streak, extending it to 14 games and 20 games, respectively. He earned a hit and drew a walk on the day. 

Joey McMannis started on the mound, and Brayden Ryan, Cristofer Cespedes, David Milberg, Logan Koester, Andrew Koshy and Andrew Johnson appeared out of the bullpen. The latter five combined for five scoreless innings. 

Breaking Down The Action

  • UCLA scored 11 runs in the top of the second. It did its damage with a home run, four singles, a double and a walk. Overall, the Bruins had nine hits in the inning.
  • The Terps loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the inning, but UCLA turned a double play and didn’t surrender a run. 
  • Bryaden Ryan pitched a 1-2-3 top of the third inning. In the bottom half, Aden Hill doubled down the infield line to score Maryland’s first run. The Terps also loaded the bases after but couldn’t cut further into the deficit. They trailed 11-1.
