BERKELEY – The California softball team (22-5, 5-1 ACC) suffered its first loss since Feb. 20 after dropping the series finale to Georgia Tech (17-11, 5-4 ACC), 8-5, on Sunday at Levine-Fricke Field in Berkeley, Calif.
In the loss, the Golden Bears dropped their first home game and first conference contest of the season.
In the first inning, both teams saw a runner cross home plate from one hit apiece. Mia Phillips started her impressive day with a solo home run, her third of the season, to give the Bears the lead for the first time in the game. Phillips was a base hit away from hitting for the cycle after recording a double and a triple to go 3-for-3 on the day.
In the bottom of the third, Tianna Bell blasted a two-run shot to right field, her team-leading eighth of the season, improving the lead to 4-1 after three innings of action.
The Yellow Jackets cut the deficit by one run in the fourth before a momentum swing in the fifth inning. Down 4-2, Georgia Tech used a five-run frame that saw Alyssa Willer clear the bases with a grand slam to give the Yellow Jackets a 7-4 advantage midway through the fifth.
Lagi Quiroga earned her first hit of the series after recording her seventh home run of the season in the bottom of the fifth inning to chip away at the deficit.
The Yellow Jackets pulled away in the sixth inning after adding another run on the scoreboard en route to securing the victory.
