Wurst Pitches Scoreless Outing In Win Over Delaware, 5-4


COLLEGE PARK, MD – Freshman Aubrey Wurst surrendered zero runs in relief as  Maryland softball defeated Delaware, 5-4, at Maryland Softball Stadium on Wednesday. Maryland is now 15-15 overall heading into its home weekend series against No. 7 UCLA.  

Tied at 4-4 in the bottom of the fifth inning, Gracie Wilson scored the go-ahead run on a defensive error by Delaware (18-11). The freshman put herself into scoring position after stealing second base — the first swiped bag of her career. She was also a pinch runner for Sydney Lewis, who reached base on a hit by pitch. 

The Blue Hens got off to a 4-0 lead with two runs in each of the first two innings. Maryland then responded with four runs in the bottom of the second to tie the game. Julia Shearer hit a two-run homer, and Mazie MacFarlane and Matti Benson each hit an RBI double.  

Shearer’s home run was the second of her career and her first of the season. She earned her first career multi-RBI game. 

 

Genevieve Ebaugh made her third start of the season before Wurst entered the game in relief. The freshman improved to 5-2 on the season, pitching five scoreless innings. She struck out four batters and walked three.  

Six different Terps recorded a hit in the game, including MacFarlane, Benson, Lewis, Shearer, Sammi Woods and Madison Runyan.  

Breaking Down The Action

  • Delaware took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first with a two-run home run.
  • The Blue Hens increased their lead to 4-0 with an RBI double and single in the second. 
  • In the bottom of the second, Maryland tied the game at 4-4. Julia Shearer got the Terps on the board with a two-run home run to center field. Mazie MacFarlane and Matti Benson then followed, with each hitting an RBI double. 
  • Despite having the bases loaded, Delaware got out of the fourth inning without allowing a run.
  • Gracie Wilson scored from second base on a defensive error by Delaware. She put herself in scoring position by stealing second base. The Terps led for the first time in the game at 5-4. 
  • Aubrey Wurst recorded the final three outs. She didn’t allow a single hit across five innings and surrendered zero runs.
