It’s the first ranked win for MSU since May 11, 2018, a 7-0 win over No. 16-ranked Michigan in the B1G Tournament. The Spartans last defeated a Top 5 opponent on April 14, 1998 when they topped No. 2-ranked Michigan, 7-4, in East Lansing.
MSU improves to 16-27 (6-14 B1G) while Oregon falls to 45-6 (17-3). Game two of the series will be televised nationally on Big Ten Network at 5:00 p.m. ET on Saturday.
Senior Madison Taylor (3-6) went 5.0 innings in the circle allowing four earned runs on five hits while striking out two. Freshman Carsyn Cassady entered the game with one on in the sixth and later got out of a bases loaded jam, firing 2.0 scoreless innings of relief allowing no hits and striking out two to earn her second save of the season.
Junior Kaelin Cash went 3-for-3 at the plate with a solo shot to open the scoring the second inning, her eighth long ball of the season. Senior Collette Allen and junior Sydney Doloszycki each doubled, with Doloszycki’s clearing the bases for a game-high three RBIs.
Cash and the Spartans scored all six of their runs in the second inning chasing Oregon starting pitcher and National Player of the Year finalist Lyndsey Grein from the contest early on. It was Cash who started the scoring onslaught with a solo shot off the light pole in left field.
