SAN DIEGO (May 15, 2025) – Washington State starter Luke Meyers worked seven innings but the Cougars potential tying run was caught stealing at second in the ninth inning in a 3-2 defeat at San Diego State Thursday evening.
Meyers struck out seven and scattered four hits over seven innings while Kyler Northrop recorded a pair of hits including a game-tying RBI-single in the fifth inning. SDSU combined to strikeout 11 Cougar hitters and broke a 2-2 tied with a solo homer in the seventh inning.
WSU took an early 1-0 lead after Max Hartman was hit by a pitch, moved to third on a failed SDSU pickoff attempt and scored on a wild pitch. SDSU scored twice in the fourth inning on an RBI-triple and a sacrifice fly before a solo homer to left field led off the seventh inning gave the Aztecs a 3-2 lead.
In the ninth, Logan Johnston punched a leadoff single the other way to left field and was punch-ran for by Watterson. One batter later, Watterson broke for second and seemed to slide in ahead of the tag but was called out and the call stood after replay before SDSU closed the game with a popout to second.
