Welcome to a special omnibus edition of Statcast Standouts. Today, we’re combing through the Statcast data for all 30 draft classes to find at least two pitchers in at least class, ideally drafted in the 10th round or beyond, who caught our attention. Even a 20th round pick is an exceptional athlete, and we’ll endeavor to show you why a major league team found them interesting, and what they need to improve to make the major leagues.

Arizona Diamondbacks

Tayler Montiel, LHP, 12th Round

What makes him interesting: Montiel has a potentially plus sinker that he throws with roughly average velocity. It’s a true sinker, getting roughly six inches of drop due to seam-shifted wake effects.

What he needs to improve: His sweeper is inconsistent, and likely needs some refinement. With his arm angle, and ability to leverage seam effects, he should be touching 20 inches of gloveside movement. He’ll also need a changeup, which is mis-labeled on the chart as a sinker.

Raul Garayzar, RHP, 18th Round

What makes him interesting: Garayzar throws three fastballs: A true sinker, with about 5.5 inches of extra depth from seam-shifted wake, a traditional four-seam fastball with below-average ride and a hard cutter that flashes gloveside movement. The changeup has some good properties as well, with ideal velocity separation from the fastballs, as well as strong movement deviation from the spin axis (aka seam-shifted wake).

What he needs to improve: Garayzar likely needs to throw in the 95 mph range to make this all work. The slider needs more depth, and he’ll need either a true sweeper or a curveball.

Athletics

Samuel Dutton, RHP, 10th Round

What makes him interesting: Dutton throws five distinct pitches: Fastball, sinker, changeup, gyro slider and slow curveball. He also has tremendous feel for spin, averaging almost 2800 rpm on his slider, and nearly 2500 rpm on his four-seam fastball.

What he needs to improve: Both the fastball and the sinker have poor shape, which will need to improve dramatically to be viable pitches. Given the spin rates on the fastball, this may be a spin efficiency problem. If Dutton can get to plus ride on the fastball, the makings of a major league starter are present.

Griffin Kirn, LHP, 14th Round
