SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The No. 6 Notre Dame Fighting Irish (3-0-1) remain undefeated on the season as they defeated the Michigan Wolverines (2-3-0) in a 3-0 win at Alumni Stadium on Thursday evening.

The Irish scored on three headers in the win, with goals coming from the sophomore trio of Izzy Engle, Abby Mills, and Ellie Hodsden.

Notre Dame finished with a season-best five assists as senior Laney Matriano led the way with a team-best and career-high three assists. Senior Leah Klenke and graduate Carolyn Calzada each recorded an assist for the Irish in the win.

The Irish outshot the Wolverines 16-5 as sophomore Sonoma Kasica finished with three saves and recorded her ninth career clean sheet.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Irish were on the board in the 11’ with the action starting on a free kick at centerfield. Matriano found Carolyn Calzada on the left wing as Calzada found Engle in the box on a cross. Engle would score her fifth goal of the season on a header to put the Irish in front 1-0.

Mills would go on to net her first goal of the season in the 72’ as she cut to the top of the box on a corner kick from Matriano. Matriano delivered a beautiful ball to Mills as she netted it into the right upper 90.

Hodsden followed up shortly after with her second goal of the season, coming from a free kick set piece. The pass from Klenky and then Matriano put Hodsden in perfect position to score on a header from the back side of the box, sending it just over the goalie’s head to find the back of the net.
