SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The No.6 Notre Dame Fighting Irish advanced to 4-0-1 on the season as they defeated the Oakland Golden Grizzlies (1-4-1) in a 8-0 victory on Sunday evening.
The Irish had seven players in the scoring column tonight, but senior Laney Matriano led the way with a brace, recording a career-high two goals in the dominant win.
Junior Morgan Roy and sophomore Grace Restovich recorded their first goals of the season, The sophomore duo of Annabelle Chukwu and Izzy Engle chipped in one goal a piece for their second and sixth goals on the season, respectively.
It was a night of career-firsts and career-highs for Notre Dame. Freshman Tessa Knapp and sophomore Randie Foor each recorded their first career goals, with junior Jackie Hollomon grabbing her first save in goal.
Sophomore Lily Joseph tied her career-high two assists and Senior Kiki Turner recorded her first career assist.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Matriano put the Irish on the board, netting the first two goals of the game in the first 20 minutes of play. The midfielder scored first on a corner kick from Roy, where Matriano shot and played the rebound on the save to find the back of the net in the 15th minute.
Just six minutes later, Restovich came down the left wing and crossed the ball to Matriano at the top of the box, sending it into the upper 90 off her right boot.
Roy followed with her first goal of the season, taking on her defender by dribbling to the right side of the box and firing in the far left bottom corner in the 23rd minute. The Irish led 3-0 at the end of the first half before scoring an impressive five goals in the final 45 minutes.
Restovich kicked off the scoring run in the second half as she was able to sneak it past an Oakland defender after playing it off the save from a Roy shot.
Engle couldn’t let a game go by without getting in on the scoring action. Joseph found Engle at the top of the box and after working around her defender, Engle buried her effort into the bottom left corner to extend the Irish lead to 5-0 in the 75th minute.
Knapp joined the scoring frenzy just three minutes later as she put away a beautiful ball from the left wing right into the top of the net, just above the goalie’s head.
Leading 7-0, Foor found Chukwu on a cross and after two touches from 18 yards out, she found the back of the net in the bottom right corner. Foor capped off the win with her first career goal on a pass from Turner in the 87th minute.
