Detroit Tigers bail out bullpen with 4-run rally in ninth in 8-7 win over Yankees

TAMPA, Fla. — The Detroit Tigers rallied to beat the New York Yankees, 8-7, on Sunday at George M. Steinbrenner Field, evening their record at 1-1 in Grapefruit League play in spring training.

Tigers DH Javier Baez bats against Yankees pitcher Wandy Peralta during the third inning of Grapefruit League action at George M. Steinbrenner Field on Sunday, March 20, 2022, in Tampa, Florida.

What happened

The Tigers scored two runs in both the first and second innings, thanks to Javier Baez, Spencer Torkelson and Robbie Grossman. Left-hander Tarik Skubal blanked the Yankees through his two innings.

Grossman opened the first with a four-pitch walk against Yankees starter Luis Severino, and Baez drove him in with a two-strike double — turning on the jets to reach second base — to the right-center field gap. It was Baez’s first hit in a Tigers uniform.
