Sal Frelick Gets Five Hits

D-backs' Tommy Henry Ready For Second Full Pro Season

Wednesday’s Prospect Report

Alek Thomas, OF, D-backs: Thomas doubled for Triple-A Reno to lead off the top of the first, but he was stranded at third. Four innings later he tripled, but was then thrown out trying to score on a fly ball. So in the ninth inning, he made sure he could score. Thomas hit a walk-off grand slam home run to give Reno a 7-5 win over Salt Lake. Thomas fell one single short of the cycle.

Sal Frelick, OF, Brewers: Milwaukee’s 2021 first-round pick went 5-for-5 yesterday with a double and a home run. It’s early enough in the season that such a day can turn around a player’s slash line. Frelick came into the game hitting .200/.333/.257.  He leaves hitting .300/.404/.450. It was the second five-hit game of Frelick’s young pro career.

Grayson Rodriguez, RHP, Orioles: For the second time in three starts, Rodriguez allowed one hit. This time he went 5.1 scoreless innings against Triple-A Durham, striking out eight.

MacKenzie Gore, LHP, Padres: Gore’s impressive MLB debut continued with five scoreless innings of work on Thursday against Cincinnati to pick up his first MLB win.

George Kirby, RHP, Mariners: After a somewhat rocky 2022 debut, Kirby has thrown back-to-back starts with five scoreless innings apiece. Last night he allowed five hits and two walks to Corpus Christi but no runs while striking out seven.

Simeon Woods Richardson, RHP, Twins: Woods Richardson has had an excellent start to the season with Double-A Wichita. Matched up against 2021 first-round pick Ryan Cusick, Woods Richardson easily won the duel, allowing no runs or walks in six scoreless innings. He struck out six and allowed two hits. Woods Richardson is the minors’ ERA leader. There are plenty of pitchers with a 0.00 ERA, but no one else has a 0.00 ERA with as many as his 16.2 innings pitched.

Nelson Velazquez, OF, Cubs: A four-hit day is rare. Getting four hits and homering is even better. Velazquez hit two home runs and doubled twice, giving him 12 total bases the most he’s…
