Cyclones Score Six in the Ninth to Defeat Jersey Shore on Saturday

Cyclones Split Doubleheader in Jersey Shore on Friday

Lakewood, NJ – Trailing by two runs in the top of the ninth, and down to their final out, the Cyclones rallied for six runs to steal a win from the Jersey Shore BlueClaws by the score of 8-4. Joe Suozzi went 3-for-4 – including the decisive base knock in the ninth – with a run scored, a triple and three RBI to lead the Brooklyn bats.


Mike Vasil made the start for Brooklyn and quickly found himself in first inning trouble. The first four batters of the game reached thanks to a hit by pitch, a pair of hits and a throwing error and by the time the Cyclones recorded their first out of the game, the BlueClaws already had a 3-0 lead. Later in the frame, with Nick Matera on 3rd base, Vasil was called for a balk to make it 4-0.

In the top of the 3rd Warren Saunders got Brooklyn on the board with a solo blast, his first homer of the season, and an inning later Jose Mena scored on a throwing error to trim the Brooklyn deficit to 4-2.

In the top of the fifth, Brooklyn had a golden opportunity to get closer – putting runners on second and third with nobody out in the top of the fifth but Matt O’Neill and JT Schwartz struck out before Brandon McIlwain lined out to end the threat. The Cyclones also got a pair of runners aboard in the sixth but failed to push a run across.

But in the last chance top of the ninth, Branden Fryman jump-started a rally with a one-out triple and Rowdey Jordan worked a walk to put the tying runs on base and this time the Cyclones were able to break through. Matt O’Neill had an RBI groundout, scoring Branden Fryman, to make it 4-3. JT Schwartz then scorched a line drive that couldn’t be handled by BlueClaws shortstop Casey Martin, allowing Jordan to score from second and knot things up at 4-4. Brandon McIlwain then reached on an error and Jose Mena reached on catcher’s interference to load the bases for Joe Suozzi. The Long Island native took advantage of the scoring chance…
