LOUISVILLE, Ky. – True freshman RHP Luke Schmolke had his best performance on the mound of his young career, stymying No. 2 Louisville’s offense to power Georgia Tech baseball to win 10-4 on Saturday afternoon at Jim Patterson Stadium.
The Yellow Jackets (14-5, 3-2 ACC) got 4.2 innings from its frosh righty as he allowed just one earned run and punched out five in just his third career start. Three unearned runs crossed against him in the fifth with help from two errors on one play, but Tech didn’t let it snowball.
Schmolke then handed the ball back to the bullpen, who kept the second-ranked Cardinals (16-2, 1-1 ACC) scoreless the rest of the way. LHP Cody Carwile (2-1) turned in another terrific outing, going 3.0 innings of two-hit, scoreless play to get his second winning decision. RHP Ben King then appeared in his third-straight game and needed just three pitches to get out of the eighth unscathed.
Georgia Tech then welcomed the return of LHP Camron Hill, who hadn’t pitched due to injury since Feb. 18, who slammed the door shut with a no-hit ninth.
At the plate, the Jackets did damage, racking up six multi-hit performances on the day. Jackson Finley led the way with a 2-for-4, double and three-RBI homer day. Nicholas Romano also homered and drove in three runs, same as Stephen Reid, who mashed a solo homer.
Kristian Campbell, Jadyn Jackson and Angelo Dispigna also finished with two hits, while Jake DeLeo drove in a run with one hit.
Louisville was led by JT Benson, who went 3-for-5 with an RBI. LHP Greg Farone (1-1) suffered his first loss of the year, surrendering five runs on nine hits in just 3.1 innings pitched.
