November 28, 2023 – Southern League (SL) – Pensacola Blue Wahoos News Release
PENSACOLA, FL – In a press release on Tuesday, Minor League Baseball announced the winners of its annual groundskeeper and clubhouse attendant awards for each of the full-season Minor Leagues. Pensacola’s Scotty Atkins won the Southern League Head Groundskeeper of the Year award, while Cedric Bascom was honored as the league’s Visiting Clubhouse Attendant of the Year.
“The Blue Wahoos take great pride in the environment we provide to our players and staff,” said Blue Wahoos president Jonathan Griffith. “By doing their jobs at a high level, Scotty and Cedric help bring out the best in the entertainment product we provide at Blue Wahoos Stadium. These recognitions are richly deserved, and further reinforce our commitment to excellence in Pensacola.”
“We are pleased to recognize the winners of these awards as they work tirelessly behind the scenes to provide the best possible environment for our players and staffs,” said Major League Baseball’s Senior Vice President of Minor League Operations and Development, Peter Woodfork. “Their efforts are appreciated and do not go unnoticed by players and coaches throughout the Minor Leagues.”
Atkins joined the Blue Wahoos prior to the 2023 season after previous field operations roles with the Richmond Flying Squirrels and University of Richmond. With open communication and a dedication to meeting staff needs, Atkins built an immediate reputation for going the extra mile to create a professional, top-tier environment at Blue Wahoos Stadium.
Bascom, in his ninth season as visiting clubhouse manager at Blue Wahoos Stadium, maintained high satisfaction scores from visiting Southern League Clubs. His overall marks were the highest for any clubhouse manager working in a facility more than 10 years old, including perfect scores on clubhouse amenities, laundry, bathroom cleanliness and commissary cleanliness.
This marks the sixth time a Blue Wahoos employee has been honored as Southern League Groundskeeper of the Year, with the club’s original groundskeeper Ray Sayre earning five consecutive recognitions from 2013 to 2017. Bascom is the first Blue Wahoos clubhouse manager to be…
