Coming off a weekend sweep of Notre Dame, building a three-game lead over Virginia, the Diamond Heels were back in action on Tuesday night.
UNC hosted No. 19 Coastal Carolina in Chapel Hill, a top 20 showdown as the season continues on. But unfortunately for North Carolina, they couldn’t get the job done. The Diamond Heels surrendered a run in the top of the ninth to fall 5-4.
Coastal built an early 4-0 lead in the top of the second inning with a pair of singles and a ground out, silencing the home crowd a bit. But the Diamond Heels battled back.
A Vance Honeycutt home run not only made him the first UNC player in history to hit 50 home runs and steal 60 bases, but it got the Tar Heels on the board as well. After another run in the bottom of the sixth, Honeycutt hit another dinger to cut the lead to 4-3. UNC tied it up in the bottom of the eighth with a Gavin Gallaher single.
But in the end, the Chanticleers were able to steal a big win on the road.
UNC returns to action this Friday in Raleigh for a big three-game series against NC State over the weekend.
