Junior Catcher Is One Of 68 Candidates

California baseball junior Caleb Lomavita’s stellar 2024 season continues to earn recognition among the nation’s top players as he was named a semifinalist for the Dick Howser Trophy by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association on Thursday.

The Dick Howser Trophy, presented by The Game Headwear, is given in memory of the former Florida State All-America shortstop and major league player and manager who died of brain cancer in 1987. The trophy is regarded as baseball’s most prestigious award. Criteria for consideration of the trophy include performance on the field, leadership, moral character and courage – all qualities that were exemplified by Dick Howser’s life.

The native of Ewa Beach, Hawaii, is having yet another tremendous campaign. He enters the final weekend of the series with career-best numbers in average (.322), on-base percentage (.393), hits (65) and RBI (48). His 14 home runs are currently tops on the team and is tied for fifth in the Pac-12. He is just one of three players in the conference to be ranked in the top 10 in both home runs and stolen bases.

A mainstay at the top of the Golden Bear lineup, he is currently eighth on the program’s all-time home-run list with 37. He is three RBI shy of cracking Cal’s top 10 for RBI in a career. The two-time all-conference honoree and 2022 Pac-12 Freshman of the Year was named a Baseball America Preseason All-American and is on the Golden Spikes Watch List.
Lomavita is one of four players on the list representing the Pac-12 and just one of five catchers.

The ’24 award will be presented at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, Nebraska, the home of the College World Series, for the 12th year. The winner also will be unveiled on MLB Network on June 13 in the 9 a.m. (CDT) highlight show hour. A June 14 news conference with the winner will be held at 10 a.m. (CDT), the opening day just prior to the first game of the 77th NCAA College World Series, in the Schwab Stadium Media Room.

This year’s 68 candidates come from 18 different conferences and 48 different schools. The Southeastern Conference leads with 16 semifinalists with the Atlantic Coast having 13, Conference USA with six,…
