Nebraska’s No. 1, Brett Sears, might be the best arm in the regional poll, including Florida’s Jac Caglianone. There’s a level of command there that’s rarely seen in college ball. Sears is 9-0 with a 2.00 ERA this year and has walked just 4.7% of batters faced over 99 innings. Sears has a four-pitch mix when he’s at his best, but he’ll always lean on the 89-94 mph fastball and low-80s slider for outs when he needs them.
Behind Sears, the Huskers have three pitchers with 10 starts this year. Mason McConnaughey has the best ERA (3.09) over the most innings (67), but Will Walsh gives Nebraska the lefty-on-lefty matchup if the matchup calls for it. Florida isn’t likely to see one of these guys out of the bullpen, but a close game or extra innings could bring them in.
The trio of Casey Daiss, Kyle Perry and Jalen Worthley all have 20 or more appearances and multiple saves this season. Worthley is the lefty of the group, giving him the obvious matchup advantage against some of Florida’s biggest bats (Caglianone, Shelton). All three have decent strikeout-to-walk ratios. — David Rosenberg
