Giants Select Donovan Walton - MLB Trade Rumors

The Giants have selected infielder Donovan Walton’s contract from Triple-A Sacramento, the team announced. To make room for Walton on the active roster, the club optioned outfielder Luis Matos to the minor leagues. The Giants already had an open spot on the 40-man roster.

Walton will get the start in tonight’s contest with the Padres, playing second base and batting ninth. Brett Wisely, who has gotten most of his playing time since the All-Star break at second base, will slide over to short. Walton’s promotion is most likely related to shortstop Tyler Fitzgerald’s back tightness, which forced him to exit yesterday’s game in the third inning. Last night, Fitzgerald told reporters (including Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle) that the injury wasn’t particularly concerning, but he went for an MRI today, and perhaps the test results were worse than expected.
