Starling Marte out of Mets-Phillies lineup, getting treatment after negative X-rays on forearm

Starling Marte, Mets say sun a factor in crucial fourth-inning misplay in London Series loss to Phillies

After taking a 98 mph sinker from Jeff Hoffman to the forearm in the eighth inning of the Mets‘ 6-4 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday, Starling Marte is out for Sunday’s rubber match. Marte’s precautionary X-rays were negative, Carlos Mendoza said, but “he’s pretty sore” and “swollen.”

“X-rays were negative, but he’s pretty sore, swollen,” Mendoza said of Marte before Sunday’s game. “He’s getting treatment now, so he’s not going to be in the lineup, so we’ll see if he’s going to be available for us at some point.”

Marte was in apparent pain after getting drilled. Trainers took a look at him before he ultimately went to first base. After that, the outfielder stayed in the game defensively and finished the game.

“He got him good,” Mendoza said Saturday, referring to the hit-by-pitch.

The 35-year-old had a great day at the plate, reaching base four times and going 2-for-2 with a triple and three RBI.

Marte missed almost two months earlier this season with a right knee bone bruise that landed him on the IL on June 23. He returned on Aug. 18 and in 83 games this year he is slashing .271/.320/.399 with seven home runs and 37 RBI.
