Veteran right-hander and future Hall of Famer Max Scherzer is signing with the Toronto Blue Jays, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post.
Per Heyman, Scherzer’s one-year deal is worth $15.5 million, and in line with what Justin Verlander (Giants) and Alex Cobb (Tigers) signed for earlier this offseason. Both pitchers agreed to $15 million contracts.
The Mets and Yankees were both reportedly among the clubs who took in Scherzer’s throwing session in Florida last week, and he certainly would have made sense for both teams as they look to build depth in their rotations.
MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand reported earlier this week that the Blue Jays appeared to be “the most serious” potential suitor for Scherzer, with a source telling Feinsand that the Jays “have been hot for him for about two months.”
Scherzer, 40, has struggled to stay healthy since being traded from the Mets ahead of the 2023 deadline. The veteran made just 17 starts over a season-and-a-half with the Texas Rangers, but proved effective when healthy by posting a 3.57 ERA in 88.1 innings.
