Cardinals Win Louisville Super Regional, Advance to Men’s College World Series

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – Louisville punched its ticket back to the Men’s College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska, for the first time since 2019 with a 3-2 victory over Miami on Sunday, June 8. The Cardinals will head to Omaha for the sixth time in program history, with all six trips coming under Dan McDonnell’s leadership.

It marks the 19th consecutive tournament in which a team from the Atlantic Coast Conference has advanced to the Men’s College World Series. The ACC has placed a total of 35 teams in the past 18 Men’s College World Series, an average of just under two per season. Multiple ACC teams have reached Omaha 12 times during the span.

With the Cardinals and Hurricanes deadlocked at two runs apiece in the seventh inning, Louisville continued to put pressure on the Miami pitching staff. Eddie King Jr. laced a single that deflected off the glove of the diving centerfielder, allowing Jake Munroe to score the go-ahead run. Jake Schweitzer, Justin West and Brennyn Cutts combined to throw 4.0 scoreless innings in relief of Ethan Eberle. Cutts faced just one batter, inducing a fly ball to center field for the final out and starting the celebration at Jim Patterson Stadium.

Louisville, the winners of the Nashville Regional, won the series opener on Friday, June 6, with a final score of 8-1. On Saturday, June 7, Miami bounced back with a 9-6 victory, forcing Sunday’s winner-take-all Game 3.

Louisville will meet No. 8 seed Oregon State in the opening round of the Men’s College World Series. The full schedule for the Men’s College World Series will be announced at a later date.

Duke will look to advance to the Men’s College World Series for the first time since 1961 on Monday, June 9, when the Blue Devils meet Murray State in a winner-take-all Game 3. The Blue Devils won the Durham Super Regional opener on Saturday before Murray State evened the series on Sunday afternoon.

In addition to Miami, North Carolina and Florida State both saw their Men’s College World Series dreams come to a close on Sunday. The Tar Heels fell to Arizona in the third game of the Chapel Hill Super Regional, while the Seminoles were bested by Oregon State in the Corvallis Super Regional.
