It’s hard to replace a guy like Hunter Barco at the top of the rotation as soon as he leaves, but Kevin O’Sullivan might have gotten the job done with Southern Miss transfer Hurston Waldrep. He racked up 140 strikeouts in 90 innings last season and threw a pair of complete games along the way.

Waldrep could very well overtake Sproat as the No. 1 on the team, but O’Sullivan might go with what he knows as he feels out his newest ace. Any way you look at it, Florida has two potential first-round arms leading the rotation, which can’t be a bad thing.

O’Sullivan recruited Waldrep personally, so he clearly as some plan in mind.

“We knew about him in high school, but quite honestly, he was still early in his development,” Sully said when asked about Waldrep. “He would probably tell you himself, his ability to command the baseball is a lot different than it was out of high school. But as soon as he went in the portal, I remember I was in Hoover, Alabama, at a 16U tournament.

“As soon as he went in, I got on a plane the next morning at like 5:45, flew to Charlotte, got in the car and drove to Cary.He was obviously recruited by everybody, but adding someone like that with Sproat, gives us as good a 1-2 punch as we’ve had.”

He throws a 94-96 mph fastball and uses a devastating mid-80s slider as his primary breaking ball. Waldrep used to have a changeup but moved to a splitter to work off his fastball and also can break out a 12-6 curveball situationally.
