Oregon’s offensive woes seem to be over with 11-3 win at ASU

It was just this week when the Oregon Ducks baseball team went 19 scoreless innings. Now that seems to be ancient history.

After exploding for 15 runs against UC-San Diego, the Ducks followed that win up with a big 11-3 win at Arizona State Friday night.

With the victory, Oregon improved to 30-20 overall and 14-11 in conference play. Arizona State, which is in the midst of a rebuild under first-year coach Willie Bloomquist, fell to 24-26 overall and 12-13 in Pac-12 action.

The Ducks didn’t waste any time in jumping on the Sun Devils as the visitors scored three in the first inning and three more in the second. Oregon was helped out by a couple of costly errors. But still, at the end of two innings, the Ducks managed six runs on seven hits to have an early 6-1 advantage.

Anthony Hall led the way as he went 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs. His homer was his team-leading 12th round-tripper of the season and it added to Oregon’s program record of 64 home runs for the year.

Josh Kasevick also drove in three runs and Tanner Smith went 3-for-5 with a double.

Not to be overlooked is the effort of pitcher RJ Gordon in relief. The once-Friday starter relieved Christian Ciueffetelli after 2 1/3 innings. Gordon was able to go 6 1/3 innings and gave up two runs, one earned, five hits, and four strikeouts. He ran out of gas with one out to go and the Ducks turned to Rio Britton to get the last out.

The Ducks and Devils will meet for Game 2 of the series as Oregon will turn to Jace Stoffal (0-2, 7.43 ERA) to start on the mound and he will go against Kyle Luckham (6-2, 4.46 ERA) for Arizona State.

First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.
