Tony Vitello details Vols’ pitching plan in Knoxville Regional final

Vols’ pitcher Chase Burns by the numbers ahead of Alabama series

No. 1 Tennessee (55-7) defeated Campbell, 12-7, Saturday in the NCAA Tournament Knoxville Regional at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.

The Vols have advanced to the Knoxville Regional championship game Sunday against the winner between Georgia Tech and Campbell.

Georgia Tech and Campbell will play in an elimination game Sunday at 2 p.m. EDT. The winner will play Tennessee at 7:06 p.m. EDT.

Following Tennessee’s win against Campbell Saturday, head coach Tony Vitello discussed the Vols’ pitching plan for Sunday.

“It’s not ideal to not have a starter log at least five innings or whatever the magic number is,” Vitello said. “For us, it’s been four this year, but with what Kirby (Connell) did, now you feel better about what’s (available).

“(Chase) Burns, he’s going to be a guy that’s going to look and say, ‘I’ve got more than 25 pitches to contribute to this thing this weekend,’ — and that may happen, but I don’t know if he’d be able to bounce back tomorrow. That’s my one initial thought, but I haven’t discussed (all that with our staff) yet.”
