Red Wings’ Cavalli Named Pitcher of the Week

ROCHESTER, NY – Rochester Red Wings right-hander Cade Cavalli has been named the International League Pitcher of the Week after throwing seven scoreless innings, allowing just two hits while striking out seven on July 7 at Lehigh Valley (Phillies). The 23-year old retired the first 17 batters he faced in his Thursday night outing , a start which also matched his longest outings of the year (three times).

Cavalli ranks fourth in Washington’s Minor League system with 68 strikeouts. He is 3-0 with a 2.31 ERA (10 ER/39.0 IP), 41 strikeouts and a .182 opponents’ batting average in his last seven starts. In 14 starts for Rochester, Cavalli is 4-3 with a 4.54 ERA, 9.1 K/9, and a 62% strike rate.

The Oklahoma-native was recently selected to participate in the 2022 SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game roster. In his first full season at the Triple-A level, Cavalli is Washington’s top prospect according to Baseball America, FanGraphs, and MLBPipeline.com. He is rated by FanGraphs as the No. 28 prospect, Baseball America as the No. 35 prospect, and by MLBPipeline.com as the No. 48 prospect in all of baseball.

The former college shortstop has won Pitcher of the Week honors before, having earned the award as a member of Double-A Harrisburg (8/1) and Single-A Wilmington (6/13) last year. Cavalli is the first Wings pitcher to be named International League Pitcher of the Week since Randy Dobnak was awarded for his July 22-July 28, 2019 effort. Tyler Eppler won Triple-A East Pitcher of the Week honors last year making him the most recent Red Wings pitcher recipient of a league award, despite the one-year hiatus of the International League designation.

Cavalli now joins infielder Luis Garcia as Wings who have won International League honors this year with Garcia having won IL Player of the Month honors for the month of April.
