CEDAR RAPIDS, IA – With a series win already in their back pocket, Peoria entered Sunday’s contest hoping to pick up a sweep. The offense came up large yet again, giving the Chiefs a road to another 9-7 win on Sunday.

Peoria found their way on the scoreboard first for the third consecutive day, thanks to a 2-out, two RBI double from Osvaldo Tovalin who continued his monster weekend at the plate.

In the third, the Chiefs continued to add on when Brady Whalen smoked his third home run of the season to push the lead to 3-0. Later in the frame, Tovalin once again delivered, socking an RBI hit into the outfield to make it a 4-0 score.

However, Cedar Rapids didn’t go down without a fight, playing a pair of runs of their own in the fourth off a pair of singles from Yunior Severino and Wander Javier.

With the Chiefs holding a 4-2 edge, both squads traded blows in the fifth, each chalking up a crooked number. Peoria got a lift from LJ Jones on a ringing double off the left field wall to make it 5-2 Chiefs. Following that, consecutive wild pitches brought in both Jacob Buchberger and Jones to increase the advantage to 7-2.

In the bottom of the inning, the Kernels put together a second rally, using an error and a walk to get Aaron Sabato to the plate, who launched a homer to cut the Peoria lead down to just two runs at 7-5.

After a scoreless sixth inning, both teams again exchanged equal crooked numbers, the Chiefs getting their couple of runs from an Osvaldo Tovalin homer out to right field, his third in as many days in the series. That long hall also marks Tovalin one game shy of tying the franchise record for consecutive games with a homer, which he’ll have a chance to tie when Peoria comes home on Tuesday. In the Kernels half of the frame, the home squad received back-to-back hits that drove in a run from Severino and Pat Winkel that made it a 9-7 contest.

That was as close as the Kernels got, mustering just one base runner in the final two innings as Edgar Manzo got his revenge from Friday night, locking up not only the save, but the win and a series sweep for the Chiefs.

Peoria will soak up an off day tomorrow before returning to Dozer Park and playing host to the Fort Wayne Tin Caps for a 6-game series this week. First pitch is Tuesday at 6:35.
