Huskies Nominated for Multiple Seattle Sports Star Awards

SEATTLE – A pair of Washington student-athletes and the UW football team have been nominated for 2023 Seattle Sports Star awards.
 
Baylee Klingler is a nominee for Sports Star of the Year, Women’s Sports. A unanimous First-Team All-American, Klinger was named Pac-12 Player of the Year in 2022, leading the league in home runs, RBI and batting average. She was also a top-three finalist for the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year honor.
 
Michael Penix Jr. is a candidate for Sports Star of the Year, Men’s Sports. Penix finished eighth in the Heisman Trophy voting this year and was named Most Outstanding Offensive Player after leading the Huskies to victory in the Alamo Bowl. He set the Washington single-season record for passing yards with 4,641.
 
Washington Football’s standout season is nominated for Sports Story of the Year, which is given to an individual, group of individuals or organization that positively captured the attention of and inspired the state of Washington. The Huskies (11-2, 7-2 Pac-12) won the Valero Alamo Bowl over No. 20 Texas, which was their fourth win over a ranked opponent in 2022. In his first season as head coach, Kalen DeBoer‘s team finished No. 8 in the final AP poll.
