Weekend Wrap-Up: 'Cats Earn Top-10 Win at NFCA Lead-Off Classic

Around the Horn

  1. Northwestern erased an 8-3 deficit to knock-off No. 6 Texas on Friday night. First-year Kelsey Nader roped a two-run, game-tying single in the bottom of the sixth inning, before Lauren Sciborski came around to score the winning run on a wild pitch two batters later. It is the second-consecutive year the ‘Cats have knocked off a top-10 opponent in Clearwater, topping No. 3 UCLA on Maeve Nelson’s walk-off home run in last year’s SPC Elite Invite.

  2. Nader led the Wildcats with a .455 batting average (5-for-11) and .600 on-base percentage on the weekend. She tallied five hits, four walks, and only one strikeout while starting all four games in right field for the ‘Cats on her way to being named to the All-Tournament Team. After hitting seventh in the batting order the first three games, the Canton, Mich. native moved up to the two-hole in the finale against Tennessee.

  3. Senior Angela Zedak led NU with a 1.203 OPS on the weekend, blasting the ‘Cats only two home runs of the tournament. Zedak opened the scoring against No. 6 Texas with a three-run homer, then launched a solo shot against Missouri.

  4. The Wildcats spread innings out across four pitchers during the four games. Graduate transfer Cami Henry led the ‘Cats with 8.1 innings pitched, earning her first win in purple and white against South Alabama. Danielle Williams and Lauren Boyd each threw 7.0 innings, while Sydney Supple threw 5.2 innings in relief.

Chicago’s Big Ten Team heads to South Carolina for the ACC/Big Ten Challenge this weekend, where they will square-off against No. 7 Clemson and Notre Dame for two games each.
