No. 15 Blue Devils Sweep North Carolina in Weekend Series

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – No. 15 Duke softball (24-5, 7-2 ACC) completed the three-game sweep over North Carolina (10-19, 1-5 ACC) after an 8-0 shutout win in five innings on Sunday.

Home runs from graduate student Deja Davis, redshirt-freshman Jada Baker and junior Francesca Frelick highlighted the Blue Devils’ offense. Baker finished the day batting 2-for-2 with three RBI, while Davis and Frelick each went 2-for-3 with two RBI.

Freshman pitcher Cassidy Curd threw for all five innings to record the second complete game of her career. The Port St. Lucie, Fla., native held the Tar Heels to one hit while fanning five and allowing two walks in just 56 pitches.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Davis got the offense rolling with a leadoff home run straight out of center field on the fourth pitch of the game.
  • In her next at-bat, Davis posted another Duke run with an RBI-single to score junior Claire Davidson from third and push the Blue Devils ahead, 2-0.
  • Duke scored again on a wild pitch from North Carolina’s Makenna Raye Dark to extend the lead, 3-0, in the top of the second.
  • Baker added in three more runs via the long ball in the third inning, bringing in Davidson and freshman Aminah Vega, who reached on a walk and double, respectively.
  • Frelick accounted for Duke’s final two runs after launching the third home run of the contest to run rule the Tar Heels, 8-0, in five innings.
