San Francisco

CORVALLIS, Ore. – The California baseball team (10-10, 2-7 Pac 12) stayed even with Oregon State (15-9, 3-6 Pac 12) until the bottom of the ninth inning when a couple of costly mistakes allowed the Beavers to score the winning run and take the game 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at Coleman Field. The Golden Bears scored in the fourth inning to tie the game before giving up the winning run in the ninth.

The game featured a combined 24 runners left on base and the Bears were able to get out of several jams, including four bases-loaded situations. Connor Sullivan pitched well for Cal in relief, entering the game in the top of the third inning and pitching 4.1 innings, and giving up just one run on four hits while striking out six.

After Oregon State got on the board with a run in the third, Cal immediately answered by scoring a run in the fourth. Jack Johnston led off by reaching on a hit by pitch followed by a drawn walk by Tucker Bougie, giving the Bears runners on first and second with no outs. A Kade Kretzschmar sacrifice bunt advanced the runners before Dom Souto singled to center field to score Johnston.

In the bottom of the ninth, Oregon State’s Travis Bazzana drew a leadoff walk before advancing to third on a throwing error.  Bazzana then scored on a wild pitch to win the game for the Beavers.

Oregon State’s Ryan Brown (2-0) was credited with the win while Aivazian (0-1) took the loss.
