PEORIA, Ill. – TinCaps’ shortstop Jackson Merrill crushed a three-run homer and drove in four runs total, and designated hitter Nathan Martorella hit a solo blast, but the TinCaps fell short, 8-5, against the Peoria Chiefs (St. Louis Cardinals affiliate) at Dozer Park Tuesday in the opener of their six-game series.

Six different TinCaps had hits in the contest. In addition to the two home runs, center fielder Jakob Marsee ripped a double.

In the middle innings, Fort Wayne reliever Aaron Holiday was electric, striking out five and allowing just one hit across three shutout innings.

Merrill’s homer came with one out in the third inning to draw the ‘Caps within two runs. Two batters later, Martorella clobbered one the opposite way, and Fort Wayne trailed just 5-4.

Merrill tallied another RBI with a sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth, but Peoria added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth.
