JACKSONVILLE, Florida – Despite a career-day from freshman Cam Smith – four hits, two home runs, three RBI and five runs – Florida State lost Wednesday at North Florida, 15-14, in 10 innings. It was FSU’s third consecutive one-run loss and second straight loss in extra innings.
Smith, from Lake Worth, became the first Seminole since current Tampa Bay Ray Taylor Walls in 2017 to score five runs in a game. It was his second game of the season – and FSU’s sixth – that a Nole had at least three hits, three RBI and three runs scored.
FSU pounded out 17 hits, with Smith and James Tibbs III leading the way with four a piece. Jaime Ferrer, pinch-hitter Connor Moore and Jordan Carrion had two hits. Ferrer hit a two-run home run and had three RBI; Tibbs and Moore had two RBI, and Ferrer and Tibbs are now tied for the team lead with 31 RBI on the year.
Moore’s two hits were the first of his career.
Florida State trailed 12-8 entering the ninth inning before scoring four runs on five hits and a UNF error. That followed the Ospreys scoring seven runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to take what appeared to be a commanding lead.
Ben Barrett allowed one run in three innings in his fifth start. Florida State used a school-record 10 pitchers in the game, including Carrion, who started at shortstop and made his first appearance on the mound at Florida State. He last pitched in 2021 when he played for the University of Florida.
