Tigers dominate San Diego State to take doubleheader

Ciara Briggs wins second straight Gold Glove award

After a close call against Illinois in the first half of Friday’s doubleheader at the Purple & Gold Invitational, the Tigers had much smoother sailing in the second leg as it breezed to a 9-1 win over San Diego State in six innings.

Sydney Berzon pitched a complete game, allowing just two hits and one run in the process of striking out nine.

That run came in the top of the first when the Aztecs hit a two-out homer, but that was all they’d get off Berzon. LSU scored four runs in the third inning thanks to homers from Maci Bergeron and Ciara Briggs as well as an RBI triple from Danieca Coffey.

The Tigers would then combine for five runs in the fifth and sixth innings to get to the run-rule margin, headlined by a two-RBI double from Taylor Pleasants in the final frame.

LSU will be back in action for another doubleheader on Saturday against San Diego State and McNeese as it looks to remain unbeaten.
