Florida Baseball betting odds for Gators vs Mississippi State Game 1

Florida baseball welcomes Mississippi State for three-game series

Cyndi Chambers/ Gainesville Sun

Team Pitcher Record ERA
FLORIDA RHP Brandon Neely 1-0 4.50
MISS. ST. RHP Khal Stephen 3-2 4.20

NOTES: Brandon Neely is back in the starting rotation, at the expense of Cade Fisher, and there’s going to be a decent amount of pressure on him to solve Florida’s Friday night woes quickly. Neely has been dominant over his last eight innings out of the bullpen, but starting involves pacing that relieving doesn’t. Neely has experience as a starter, but it’s been two years since Florida last let him have the ball at first pitch.

Khal Stephen is a Purdue transfer who made a name for himself on the Cape this year. He’s been the Saturday starter all year but is moving into the Friday spot this week. His fastball comes in around 93 mph and can touch 95 mph, and he has a curve, slider and changeup to get strikeouts with. His strikeout rate has jumped from nearly 20% last year to 26% this season. Stephens isn’t going to throw anything too devastating against Florida, but he gets outs and leads his team to wins, which is what you want in a starter. – David Rosenberg
