Cougars Fall to Golden Bears in Series-Finale

PULLMAN, Wash. (April 14, 2024) – Washington State dropped the series-finale to California 8-2 at Bailey-Brayton Field Sunday afternoon.
 
The Cougars (17-17, 7-11 Pac-12) left 11 runners on base and made it a one-run game with a run in the third but Cal (20-14, 8-10 Pac-12) answered with two in the fourth, two in the sixth and two more in the eighth.
 
First baseman Joey Kramer collected two hits including a double and run scored while Nate Swarts singled in the eighth inning to extend his on-base streak to 24 games.
 
KEY MOMENTS OF THE GAME
In second inning, Cal used a leadoff double down the third base line, a flyout and ground ball to push the game’s first run across. The Golden Bears added another run with three hits including a two-out RBI-single up the middle in the third inning for a 2-0 lead. WSU evened things up in the bottom of the frame as Parke led off with a double to left field and scored on a Max Hartman’s RBI-groundout.
 
Cal added a pair of runs in the fourth and two more in the sixth inning for a 6-1 advantage. In the sixth, WSU picked up a run with a two-out RBI-infield single to third base by Jack Weise to make it a 6-2 Cal lead. The Golden Bears added two more runs in the eighth.

NEXT UP
WSU heads to the desert next week for a Wednesday contest at Grand Canyon followed by a weekend series at Arizona.
