Wisconsin loses heartbreaker to Indiana in game one

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Wisconsin softball team (17-27, 6-12) lost the opener of their series against Indiana 6-5. Wisconsin held a 5-0 lead throughout the majority of the game, but were walked off at Andy Mohr Field in Bloomington. Wisconsin hit three home runs in the loss, it’s their tenth loss this season when scoring five or more runs.

How it Happened:

The Badgers built a 5-0 lead over the first five innings of the game, before giving up two-spots in the fifth, sixth, and seventh inning.

Fiona Girardot got the scoring going in a big way. Taking Indiana’s Briana Copeland deep in the first at-bat of the game to go up 1-0.

The game remained scoreless for the next two innings, with starter Gabi Salo and Copeland allowing minimal traffic on the base paths. The Badgers earned another run in the fourth inning though, when power-hitter Emmy Wells added to her team lead in home runs – another solo shot to make it 2-0.

The fifth inning saw Wisconsin go up even more, as Hilary Blomberg collected her 10th double of the year to drive in Ava Kuszak. The next at-bat, Emmy Wells hit her second home run of the game, a two-run shot to put the Badgers up 5-0.

Indiana started to retaliate in the bottom of the frame, leading off the inning with four straight singles to score one run, before a ground out brought home another run. The Hoosiers scored two more the next inning when the first batter reached on an error, allowing for a two-run home run later in the inning.
