Clemson Beats Virginia to Advance Semifinals of ACC Softball Championship


DURHAM, N.C. (theACC.com) – No. 5 seed Clemson defeated No. 4 seed Virginia, 8-1, on Thursday in the quarterfinals of the 2024 Atlantic Coast Conference Softball Championship at the Duke Softball Stadium. The Tigers are set to play No. 1 seed Duke in the semifinals on Friday, May 10, at 1 p.m.

The two-time ACC Player of the Year Valerie Cagle led off the scoring with a single to left field in the first inning to give the Tigers an early 1-0 lead. Alex Brown singled through the right side to push Clemson’s lead to 2-0 in the second inning.

Virginia’s lone run came in the fourth inning as Sarah Coon drove in a run with a single up the middle.

In the fifth inning, the Tigers loaded the bases and scored off a sacrifice fly to take a two-run lead, 3-1. Brown then hit her second single of the day to drive in two more runs to put Clemson up, 5-1.

CU’s Arielle Oda walked to start off the seventh inning and immediately scored off Clark’s double to right field, before the Tigers would score their final two runs off a single up the middle from Cagle to secure the 8-1 victory.

The quarterfinals continue with No. 2 Florida State against No. 10 Notre Dame live on ACC Network and will end with the nightcap between No. 3 Virginia Tech and No. 6 Georgia Tech.
