Georgia Tech Beats Virginia Tech, 6-2, to Advance to Semifinals of ACC Softball Championship


DURHAM, N.C. (theACC.com) – No. 6 Georgia Tech defeated No. 3 seed Virginia Tech, 6-2, in the final quarterfinals game on Thursday evening in the 2024 Atlantic Coast Conference Softball Championship at the Duke Softball Stadium. The win marked head coach Aileen Morales’ 300th career win and the first ACC Championship semifinal appearance for Georgia Tech since 2012.

Georgia Tech advances to face Florida State in Friday’s second semifinal. The Yellow Jackets are the first No. 6 seed to advance to the ACC Championship Semifinals since 2015 when No. 6 seed Pitt defeated No. 3 seed Notre Dame.

Madison Dobbins led off the second inning for the Yellow Jackets with a single through the left side and later scored to give GT a 1-0 lead off an RBI single from Jin Sileo.

Virginia Tech evened the score in the third with a triple to right field from Emma Ritter, followed by a RBI sacrifice fly from Addy Greene to tie the game up, 1-1.

Georgia Tech took a 2-1 lead from Jayden Gailey’s blast to left center in the fourth inning, then pushed the lead to 5-1 in the sixth inning off Grace Connelly’s three-run shot over the center field wall, her first home run of the season.

A moonshot to left field from Tiffany Domingue gave the Yellow Jackets a 6-1 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh inning. With one out, VT’s Emma Ritter sent a home run off the scoreboard to chip away at the lead to reach the eventual final score of 6-2.

The semifinals of the 2024 ACC Softball Championship will begin at 1 p.m. on Friday, May 10, with No. 1 seed Duke facing No. 5 seed Clemson. The semifinal matchup between Florida State and Georgia Tech will follow at 3:30 p.m. Both games will be carried on ACC Network.
