Arkansas’ memorable day ends with SEC Tournament Title game berth

Friday, May 13, 2022 may go down as one of the most exciting days in Arkansas Softball history.

The day began very early, as the Razorbacks won their quarterfinal matchup with Ole Miss in the SEC Softball Tournament, 3-0. By early afternoon, the SEC announced that the Coach of the Year, Player of the Year, and Pitcher of the Year all wear Razorback red. The icing on the cake was a 4-1 win over Florida in the SEC Tournament semi-finals, giving Arkansas their second-ever berth in the SEC Tournament Championship game.

The host Gators led off the game with the first two batters in the lineup reaching on a double and single respectively. With one out in the inning, Charla Echols hit a fly ball to center field that was deep enough to score Kendra Falby from third base to put Florida up, 1-0 in the 1st inning.

Both offenses were quiet over the next two innings, but Arkansas would find their groove in the 4th inning. With the bases loaded, Audrey LaValley hit a ground ball and reached base on a fielder’s choice. However, an error by Florida resulted in two runs scored by Arkansas, giving them the 2-1 lead. In the next at-bat, Marlene Friedman would extend the lead on an infield single to shortstop. The final run of the inning was scored on a groundout by SEC Player of the Year, KB Sides.

Despite not grabbing an RBI in the game, Danielle Gibson led the team in hits by going 2-for-3 with a double. Chenise Delce allowed five hits and one earned run while striking out seven to grab the win in the circle.

Awaiting Arkansas in the SEC Tournament Championship game is the Missouri Tigers. The Razorbacks look to break a trend, as Missouri, the No. 7 seed of the tournament, has yet to allow a run in three games so far of the tournament. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. CDT. on Saturday
