Big Seventh Inning Sinks Fightins Beneath Rumble Ponies

The Reading Fightin Phils and the Binghamton Rumble Ponies (Mets) were locked in a close contest for seven innings. In the top of the eighth, the Rumble Ponies pulled ahead for good. They scored six runs and downed the Fightins 8-3 on Saturday.


Reading led 2-0 after five innings before Binghamton tied it in the top of the seventh. Johan Rojas and Aldrem Corredor each had two hits. Corredor batted in two runs, one on a monster home run in the top of the ninth.

Andrew Painter made his second Double-A start on the rubber. Through 6.1 innings, he struck out six and ended his scoreless streak at 32 consecutive innings.

Wyatt Young walked to lead off the game, but was quickly picked off by Painter for the first out of the frame.

Reading scored the game’s first run in the fourth. Kevin Vicuna walked to start the inning. He advanced to third on Wendell Rijo’s single and scored on Jhailyn Ortiz’s sacrifice fly.

The lead doubled in the bottom of the sixth. Johan Rojas led off with a single and quickly stole second. With two outs, Corredor came through with an RBI single to make the score 2-0.

The Rumble Ponies equalized in the following frame with a two-run homer off the bat of Luke Ritter.

Binghamton broke the game open in the eighth. Three singles, two walks, a double and a hit by pitch allowed six runs to score and give the visitors a six-run lead.

Corredor led off the bottom of the ninth with a solo homer, but the Fightins got no closer as a lineout, a strikeout and a pop out in foul territory ended the game.

Painter went 6.1 innings in the start. He allowed two runs on a home run, four hits and struck out six.

Andrew Schultz relieved Painter with one out in the seventh. He allowed two runners to reach on a walk and a hit by pitch but didn’t surrender a hit or a run in two-thirds of an inning.

Taylor Lehman came in to start the eighth. He got two outs on strikeouts but allowed six runs on three hits and two walks. The lefty took the loss in Saturday’s contest.

Matt Osterberg got the final out of the eighth. In his Double-A debut, the lefty gave up one hit but didn’t allow a run through 1.1 innings.

The Fightins will play at FirstEnergy Stadium next on August 28 at 5:15 PM.
