ASU Drops Second Game with Bruins

LOS ANGELES – Missed opportunities at the plate and miscues in the field played a role in Sun Devil Softball dropping the second game of its series at No. 2 UCLA, 9-1, on Saturday night at Easton Stadium.

Arizona State (21-19, 5-12 Pac-12) was held to only four hits and was unable to take advantage of four UCLA (42-4, 17-3 Pac-12) errors in the field. ASU committed three errors as well that led to three unearned runs by the Bruins.

Kayla Lissy had two of the ASU hits, with Jazmyn Rollin and Alexa Milius adding the other two. Marissa Schuld allowed seven runs (four earned) with four strikeouts. Deborah Jones threw 1.2 scoreless innings with a pair of strikeouts before Kenzie Brown allowed two runs in two-thirds of an inning to finish the night.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • UCLA opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first with two hits – including a triple – and a sacrifice fly.
  • ASU loaded the bases in the top of the second, but an interference call and a pop out ended the scoring threat.
  • The Bruins advantage reached 3-0 with a two-out single in the bottom of the second.
  • Neither team generated any runs in the third and then UCLA took advantage to two ASU errors to score four runs in the fourth to open a 7-0 lead.
  • Jazmyn Rollin singled and came around to score on a Jordyn VanHook sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth to get ASU on the board.
