Spartans Topped By Terps, 7-6, In 10 Innings Friday In B1G Opener

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Michigan State baseball rallied with a run in the top of the ninth inning to force extra-innings, and had a lead in the top of the 10th before being overtaken by Maryland, 7-6 in 10 innings, Friday evening at UMD’s Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium.

The Spartans were making their first visit to College Park since 2017 and had their two-game overall winning streak halted with the loss, sliding to 8-11 overall and starting 0-1 in B1G action. Maryland, which entered the week among others receiving votes in the national rankings, won its fourth in a row and seventh in the last eight in improving to 17-6 overall and 1-0 in conference play.

Friday was the fourth-straight meeting between MSU and UMD that has been decided by one run, as part of a total of 11 of the 17 total meetings being determined by two runs or less, as the Terps now lead the all-time series, 11-6.

MSU scored three runs in its first at bat with four doubles in the inning part of five hits for an early 3-0. UMD plated a run in the second, before taking the lead at 4-3 with three runs in the fourth and added another run in the fifth for a 5-3 advantage. The Spartans closed to 5-4 in the seventh and tied it at 5-all in the ninth on a two-out RBI single by graduate catcher Sam Thompson. MSU took a 6-5 lead in the top of the 10th when senior infielder Dillon Kark scored on a wild pitch. However, the Terps loaded the bases in the bottom of the 10th and Brayden Martin laced a two-run single down the right field line to drive in the winning run.
