Cardinals Rained out Again on Friday

June 5, 2022 – Florida State League (FSL)Palm Beach Cardinals News Release

It had been since Thursday since the Palm Beach Cardinals and Jupiter Hammerheads had seen the field at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium. After a trio of postponements, the Cardinals wasted no time once the series restarted on Sunday and took both seven-inning games against their in-stadium rivals.

After sweeping the doubleheader, Palm Beach takes the series 3-1 and now leads the season series 7-6 against the Hammerheads.

The 11 a.m. first pitch in Game 1 saw the Cardinals open the scoring with a pair of runs in the second inning off the bat of Matt Chamberlain’s two-RBI double. Wade Stauss homered in the fourth and Osvaldo Tovalin also connected on a two-run homer to give the home side a 5-0 advantage. The Cardinals made it 8-1 in the sixth on RBI from Tovalin and Whalen. Inohan Paniagua tossed six frames to earn the win, allowing just one run while striking out three. Chris Gerard’s shutout seventh bookended the Game 1 win for Palm Beach.

Game 2 saw the Cardinals have to come from behind, after surrendering two runs in the fourth. They answered in the home half of the inning, with Jeremy Rivas coming home from third base to tie the game on a passed ball.

The second contest proved to be the Whalen show. The first baseman would get the Cardinals on the board in the fourth with a solo homer, before he launched another solo home run in the sixth to give Palm Beach a 3-2 lead it wouldn’t relinquish.

Bryan Pope started Game 2 and allowed the two Jupiter runs, giving way to relievers Carlos Guarate, Edgar Manzo, and Alex Cornwell, who combined for a trio of shutout innings. Manzo would take the win while Cornwell was credited with the save.

Palm Beach now embarks on a two-week road trip, next in action this Tuesday against the Tampa Tarpons at George M. Steinbrenner Field. The Cardinals’ next game at RDCS is June 21 against the St. Lucie Mets.
