U-M Drops Tight Affair to Louisville in Regional Championship


» Louisville scored four times with two outs in the eighth inning to come from behind and defeat Michigan.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The top-seeded Louisville Cardinals came from behind to win the Louisville Regional championship in a back-and-forth classic against the University of Michigan baseball team on Monday afternoon (June 6). The Cardinals used a pair of contentious eighth-inning calls that went their way to score four times en route to an 11-9 victory at Jim Patterson Stadium.

Michigan started quickly behind three consecutive doubles as the Wolverines took a 2-0 lead only to see Louisville score seven times, all with two outs, in the bottom of the frame. With two outs, UL pieced together four hits, two walks, a hit batter, and a fielding error to take control of the game early.

Matt Frey, who doubled in the first, continued his hitting as he connected with a titanic home run to right field to cut into the lead before a lengthy lightning delay forced both teams to the bullpens in the third inning.

Louisville’s Ryan Hawks cruised through five consecutive outs before Michigan erupted in the fifth. With two outs, Clark Elliott took a 1-2 slider into the trees beyond the right field wall to make it a 7-4 game. Joe Stewart and Matt Frey both delivered sharp singles and, after a visit to the mound, Jimmy Obertop launched a first-pitch fastball into the trees in right to tie the game in front of a stunned Louisville…
