Bats Stay Hot as Baseball Downs Utah in Pac-12 Opener

PROVO – Sun Devil Baseball scored eight unanswered runs after a disastrous opening frame and withstood a furious late rally from Utah to take its Pac-12 opener, 9-7, on Friday night in Provo, Utah.
 
Luke Keaschall remained hot, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs, three runs and a homer. Nu’u Contrades logged three hits – including two doubles – and Ryan Campos notched yet another three-hit game to boost his average over .400 for the season.
 
After giving up four unearned runs in the first inning, Ross Dunn settled in nicely to go 5.1 innings with seven strikeouts and just a single walk with no earned runs allowed.
 
ASU rallied behind that after going down 4-1 to take a 9-4 lead after seven innings, fueled by a 13-hit day with six doubles.
 
Things got a little hairy in the late innings with Utah rallying for three runs over the final two innings to bring the tying run to the plate several times but Brock Peery and Jesse Wainscott did just enough to keep the Sun Devils on top down the stretch.
 
TURNING POINT
The wheels easily could have come off for Ross Dunn after a first inning grand slam and four unearned Utah runs that gave the Utes an early 4-1 lead. But Dunn settled in very efficiently, working his way through the next 4.1 innings without allowing a score and only giving up one hit.
