The Toronto Blue Jays signed manager Charlie Montoyo to a contract extension on Friday, trusting the 56-year-old to guide the up-and-coming team amid increasing expectations for 2022.
Montoyo has his detractors, with a large portion of the fan base disagreeing with some of the strategic decisions he’s made during his tenure. When you take a step back, it’s hard to argue with his results, as he’s overseen a club that has gone from 95 losses in his debut season to a legitimate World Series hopeful.
Montoyo is one of the more laid-back managers in Blue Jays history, as there have been some colourful characters in the dugout since the team came into existence in 1977. The group is highlighted by the likes of Bobby Cox, John Gibbons, and two-time World Series winner Cito Gaston.
